An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Phil Harter opened his first powersports dealership in 1972. The Cycle Shop was located on West Boylston Street in Worcester where Phil was able to secure the lines of Ducati and Norton motorcycles. Phil was pretty much a one-man operation at first. Eventually he hired a mechanic for his service department. Word soon spread of Phil’s honesty and integrity which in turn helped The Cycle Shop grow over the next 37 years.

The Kawasaki line was added in 1974 and the dealership changed its name to Performance Cycles that year and continued to expand, outgrowing the West Boylston Street location and moving to Route 20. Performance Cycles discontinued offering Ducati in 1976 and Norton went out of business later that year.

After another move to Route 9 in Shrewsbury, Performance Cycles moved down the road to its present location in 1982. Yamaha motorcycles and All-Terrain Vehicles were added in early 1989 and the Polaris line of ATVs and snowmobiles were added later that same year.

Triumph motorcycles became a part of Performance Cycle’s offering in 1995.

Phil Harter is still the dealer principal and active in the over-all management of Performance Cycles. His daughter, Jennifer Harter, joined the business in 2001. She is General Manager and supervises the day-to-day operation consisting of over 15,000 square feet of showroom and a warehouse along with 10 year-round employees with over 150 years combined experience in the industry.
